2025: My Year in Numbers

I haven’t written one of these posts since 2017. I’m not sure why I fell off, but I have, and it's time to get back to it! What’s interesting is that I’ve become more enamoured with tracking data, not less. And so on top of doing a lot of the categories from before, I’ve added some new areas for 2025.

Let's get into the numbers for 2025!

Step Tracking

When we moved from NYC to California, I knew that my step count would take a hit. I was losing the automatic steps from my 1-mile walk to and from work each day, not to mention the organic walking that you do when living in an urban area. Fortunately my steps have still been averaging over 10K a day but not trending in the right direction.

AVERAGE STEPS TAKEN PER DAY: 12,569

SLEEP TRACKING

One of the areas that has changed the least since my last “year in numbers” was my average sleep time. I’m right around 7 hours a day, with some months coming in at 7.25. It’s obvious when I look at my Oura ring that I get more sleep on holidays and weekends and that the international travel I did for work earlier in 2025 (Feb/Mar) and later for vacation (Jun/Jul) had very negative impacts on my sleep.

2025 - Reading: 57 Books

One of the most challenging goals I set for myself in 2025 was to read 50 books. That’s the highest total I've set for myself since I started in 2012, and I surpassed the goal by reading 57 books. That’s roughly 21K pages, with my average review rating at 3.8. That’s approximately five books a month, and all but one were audiobooks this year.

And because I’ve been tracking all of my books here’s the full list in order of reading.

Of the 57 books I read in 2025, I rated five stars (12 of 57, ~21%):

  • What I Ate in a Year by Stanley Tucci

  • The Little Liar by Mitch Albom

  • You Are Here by David Nicholls

  • A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne

  • Tom Lake by Ann Patchett

  • Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted by Suleika Jaouad

  • Abundance by Ezra Klein

  • The Obstacle in the Way by Ryan Holiday

  • My Friends by Fredrik Backman

  • 107 Days by Kamala Harris

  • Twice by Mitch Albom

  • The Correspondent by Virginia Evans

If you’re curious like I am about how my reading consumption has changed over the years, here’s the history.

2025 - TV: 27 Shows

For many years now, I have been an avid user of a service called Trakt. It’s an app that lets you track every TV show (and now movie) you watch. It’s a great tool to keep an eye on the shows you watch, see when they return, and know what you watch in a given year. It’s one of my favorite services, and we’ve been tracking for so long that it’s interesting to see how our habits change over time. In 2025, we watched less TV than in any year we’ve been tracking. Not shocking. With work travel, a cross-country move, and a 1-year-old daughter, the time for a weekend binge or a late-night romp is behind us.

That didn’t mean we didn’t watch some great TV this year. Here’s a recap of the year:

So we watched 27 shows in 2025, but how does that compare in terms of number of episodes / hours of TV we watched last year?

2025 - Movies: 70

The biggest surprise to me is how much I’ve gotten back into movies this year. The format has worked better for our lives with Elle, so much so that we started “Friday Night Movie Night” this year. We watched 15 movies (starting in July) for Friday Night Movie Night, with Jenn and me switching off picking them. There were no parameters on the movie choices, but we tended to choose movies that were 2 hours or shorter. There are also many movies I watched on my own, either on planes for work or at home during Elle’s nap. We even saw a few movies in theaters this year (Mickey 17, Black Bag, Superman, Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Weapons, and One Battle After Another).

All of my movies have been tracked on Letterboxd, but I’ve also been using a service called Reelgood to see whether any of the movies I want to watch are on streaming services we already pay for.

So how does my movie watching compare to previous years? That’s a good question!
