Maldives 2021 Day 4 - Caution, Slippery When Wet
It’s hard to imagine but two days in a row we’ve been up before the sun and have gone out on our deck and watched the skies turn from dark to light. It’s something day-to-day I’d never even think about doing but on vacation, there’s something magical about it. It feels like you’re stealing time back. The time that you’d normally be spending trying to soak up every last bit of sleep before you hurry off to work or to get groceries or take Frasier out. Instead, we sat outside in our St. Regis bath robes watch the sun come up not really concerned with what time it was if we got enough sleep, or what the plan was for the day. Our only real thought this morning was how lucky we were.
Somehow I got Jenn two days in a row to go play tennis with me. We both were a bit sore from our first day of tennis but it was nice to bike over there and get some exercise in before another day of sun and relaxation. After tennis, we once again showered off, got dressed, and made our way back to breakfast. Today I got sparkling wine, Jenn got a mimosa and stuck with her eggs and waffles. I tried their eggs Benedict which were good but not nearly as memorable as yesterday’s duck confit. The highlight of the breakfast was a potato curry dish that was out of this world. It came with a very light puff pastry/bread that was to die for.
We got back to our room and really our only plan for today was to lay out. That really is the plan for most of the week, so these daily updates may become a bit repetitive. Before we got to relaxing I thought I would rip the bandaid and jump in the ocean. I knew I’d need to do it at least once and after the sharks yesterday I figured I’d do it when I could see around me. Of course, best laid plans. As I was going down the steps I slipped completely and landed on my leg and then into the water. Not the most graceful way to get in but I did it. I got a nice bruise on my upper leg and my ego was a bit embarrassed but otherwise no worse for the wear. Jenn and I both later went in again and swam around checking out the fishes before going back to our much more desirable and shark free pool.
The rest of the day was much like the last two we went from our pool to our loungers to our room. Before dinner, we’d watch an episode or two of Sex Education and then we’d head out for dinner. Tonight we decided to try the Whale Bar an architecturally stunning building right on the edge of the water. I had heard such great things about their bloody mary that I had to try it. It came in a seashell and although I think it could have been very good it had a distinctly fishy taste that wasn’t my favorite. Jenn was fortunate to fare much better with their take on a French 75 that was delightful. For our main course, Jenn had the tuna and I had a massive rib eye. We split some truffle fries as well. Between the great music, beautiful setting, and really good food it was a really nice night and we were fortunate to have incredible weather that changed to rain almost immediately after we got back to our room.

It’s funny you’d think that doing nothing would mean the days would go by slowly but it’s quite the opposite. We keep joking that we have no idea where the days go and we aren’t doing anything. That just goes to show you how great it is to be away and relaxing for the first time in a long time.
