Phoenix Trip Day 3: The Championship Phoenician

Day 3 (July 5th, 2014)

After a brilliant first day at The Phoenician it was time to dive deep into vacation mode. Saturday as all about relaxing. We woke up late and laid around our room until around 9AM. When we both finally got hungry we drove to a local breakfast spot called The Good Egg. We've actually been to two other Good Egg's (once in Vegas and once in Phoenix) and so we knew we liked it. Jenn got a normal scrambled egg breakfast and I had a ham cheese and pepper omelet. It was also the first good cup of coffee I had the entire trip so that was a highlight.

After breakfast we drove back to The Phoenician and went down to the pool. It was packed. We were lucky enough to find a two loungers right next to one of the side pools and plopped down. It was probably around 107-108 degrees when we were out there. About every five to ten minutes we would go and jump in to cool off. The heat was insane. Luckily the pool staff brought over pitchers of water to everyone and kept the refills coming. We also got a great pina colada which hit the spot in the insufferable heat .

I think we lasted around two hours out by the pool and after going down the water slide we waved the white flag and headed for the air conditioning. We went back to the room and both read for a bit. I started getting antsy. I knew we were going to play on their grass tennis courts at some point in the day but was starting to become impatient as to when that would be. Well at around 2:30PM I somehow convinced Jenn that it was time to go play. She reluctantly agreed and a half hour later in almost 110 degree heat we were on the grass courts at The Phoenician.

When we got there three guys were playing on the courts so we played some ping pong and after five minutes or so they wrapped up their match and it was our turn to take the court. Jenn lasted about five maybe ten minutes before she wanted no more of the heat. We ended up finishing a set and then rallying a bit before we called it. Probably 45 minutes or so. It was still so great playing on grass. Its such a different surface to play on the hard courts, I wish there was some more courts like that to play nearby.

After our grass court outing we both took showers and rested for an hour or two and headed down to the hotel lobby and got some drinks. Jenn got a fantastic glass of Red Wine and I had an Old Fashion.

We spent a good hour down at the hotel lobby lounge enjoying the beautiful piano music and panoramic views of Scottsdale. It sure beat basking in the 110 degree heat that's for sure. After drinks Jenn drove us to a nearby Chipotle (a Saturday ritual in the Szerlip household) and brought it back to the hotel.

We had an amazing meal and even watched the movie The Switch. While Jenn was watching the movie I passed out and woke up from a loud booming noise. We had completely forgotten about the July 5th fireworks that the hotel was putting on. So we rushed out of our hotel room and right around the corner was an amazing firework show. It was such the perfect way to end one of the most relaxing days of the year.
