A Look Back - June 2022
Not every month goes exactly as you plan it. But even with the changes of a few of our plans this month June ended up being a great start to the summer.
RECAP OF THE MONTH
We left the beautiful Memorial day weekend to welcome in June, the end of spring, and some of the most brutal weather New York City has to offer. If my monthly recaps only indicate the fun things that happen in our life, the month of June started with me and Frasier getting our annual physicals. We both came out with good results, even if my cholesterol is high and Frasier needs a deep cleaning of his teeth. We took the good results into the weekend when Jenn and I saw our second to last show of the season, The Hangmen.
Speaking of Frasier, he was stuck with me the following week when Jenn took the train from Penn Station to Boston for her team’s offsite, the first one that she hosted on her own. From her own reviews, the event went on without a hitch and she enjoyed Boston, a place we hadn’t visited until then. Her team got to take a tour of Fenway Park and enjoyed some of the sights of Boston while also getting some work done. I had thought about coming to join her in Boston but hotel prices were insane and we had a trip planned for the following week. Frasier survived the week with just me although he did look a bit “too” excited when she got home. Or maybe that was just relief?
Speaking of that trip that we were going to take, the following week we packed up the Mercedes, dropped off Frasier at NY Tails, and drove the 6 hours north to Niagra Falls and Toronto. I recapped the entire trip already, but needless to say from the time we had dinner with Grandma and Ron to arriving back home in New York we had a fabulous trip. Although it was short it felt like a time that we were able to fully disconnect and enjoy a new place. I might have just convinced Jenn to go to Montreal with me, we shall see!
We arrived back to our normal routine. One of our favorite Sunday activities is taking Frasier for a long walk in the morning before it gets too hot, popping open a bottle of Champagne, blasting the music on the Sonos throughout the house, and making brunch. It feels so domesticated for us, but it’s become 3-4 hours that I wouldn’t trade for anything else in the world.
The rest of the month went by like a blur. I was scheduled to leave for London for work on June 29th, but I was in close contact with someone with COVID in the office so that got delayed to July 1. So I wrapped up the month working from home with Jenn getting ready to go on another European adventure.
TV WE WATCHED
Given all of the travel we did in June we didn’t watch as much TV this month. Jenn would say the highlight was the first part of Season 4 of Stranger Things and I would say it was the return of For All Mankind. But if we had to agree on one thing it would be that The Staircase was a riveting mini-series that we are so glad we watched. But really everyone should be watching For All Mankind, what a show!
BOOKS I READ (OR LISTENED TO)
I miss having more time to read if I am being honest. Seeing 4 books this month just brings me a sense of joy because each of these books for different reasons gave me a lot of joy this month. The highlight of the month I think I would give to The Secret History a slow-burn, character-driven, literary fiction book that I fully got wrapped up in. I didn’t love the ending but I’ll take a good journey over a great ending any day of the week.
MOVIES WE WATCHED
Only one movie this month, and it had to be this stinker. Jenn’s family had a tradition on vacations to go see movies, and it felt appropriate that while in Toronto we’d go see the “last” Jurrasic World movie. It wasn’t very good, but it was nice seeing a movie something that we still haven’t done much of since COVID.
THEATER WE SAW
We ended the season with two very different shows. Hangmen was “fine” but the real highlight of the month was What the End Will Be. It’s a play about a family dealing with the end of their Dad/Grandpa’s life and how each of them deals with it. It was a beautiful, intimate, tear-ridden performance that we both loved. Its the type of show that we go to the theater for.
GAMES I'VE BEEN PLAYING
It’s been a quiet period on the games front, I haven’t played a ton of new games. There are a few I’m looking forward to this fall, but for now, I just get a game of NBA 2K22 or MLB The Show 22 in and go on with the rest of my day.
