TV Review: Daredevil Season 1

I rarely watch TV shows on my own. Most of the time Jenn and I will suffer through a show that the other likes. More times then not it's Jenn suffering through one my shows. However I would argue that watching one episode of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette should grant me a season of any show of my choosing. But I digress. When I saw the trailer for Daredevil at the beginning of 2015 I had a good feeling about it but I knew I'd never be able to get Jenn to watch it with me.

Sporadically over the last couple of months I've watched the first season of Daredevil on Netflix. I thought the show would be good but never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd actually fall in love with it. It's easily one of the best shows out right now. Charlie Cox does a brilliant job playing Matt Murdock a blind lawyer who has the hyper sensitivity to sound. He gets into some of the best hand to hand combat fights of anything I've ever seen. I'd easily put it up there against things like the Daniel Craig 007 movies or the Matt Damon Bourne movies. This is heart pounding action that happens in almost every single episode. It's also a lot darker then anything else Marvel is putting out. The show takes place in Hell's Kitchen and according to the show that's not a place you want to be. Reminds me a bit of Gotham.

What I love most about Daredevil though is that Matt Murdock isn't invincible. The punishment he takes from the bad guys carries over from episode to episode. He doesn't just miraculously heal. That goes for everyone else in the show too. Although there is a little bit of suspension of belief, most characters actions in the show feel believable. You can understand why Matt is doing what he is doing and his friends react accordingly when he goes missing at random points of the day/night.

The other big success of the first season of Daredevil is Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk or as anyone familiar with the comic/show know him as Kingpin. D'Onofrio is incredible. A truly chilling villain. His performance in Daredevil is responsible for some of the best moments of the first season. It would be a shame if in the future he doesn't receive some award nominations for his portrayal of Kingpin.

Needless to say I loved the first season of Daredevil. It was one of the best TV shows I've watched all year. Not to mention one of my favorite Marvel experiences ever. I would put up this season of Daredevil against any of the Marvel Studios movies of the past 5+ years. Its brilliant and I cannot wait to see what Netflix and Marvel have coming next.
