Book Review: Yes Please
I've read my fair share of celebrity autobiographies. It's not a favorite genre but it's one I've frequented enough to know the good from the bad. Probably more then any other genre to be a good celebrity autobiography you have to be great. It's hard for these to not feel like cash grabs. These folks usually have giant platforms in which they can tell their story from. Look at Amy Poehler for example. She's got her SNL days, her Parks and Recreation days, and now she and Tina Fey could host any award show they wanted too. And yet when I saw that Amy Poehler put out an autobiography I immediately hit purchase.
2015 Reading Challenge: Books 16-20
I currently sit just barely on schedule to meet my goal of finishing 27 books in 2015. There's been a lot going on in the World of Joel (as anyone who frequents the blog would know) and as such my time for reading has been a bit limited. Not to mention with our recent move it brings me closer to work which means less time on the road to listen to books. And yet I keep trudging along and am now ready for the next batch of books I plan to partake in. My last batch was probably the best selection of five books so far with all but one being fantastic. Hopefully I can continue picking winners with books 16 through 20.
Book Review: Station Eleven
I knew nothing about the premise of Station Eleven before picking it up on Audible. I had only heard great things and saw that the book was getting rave reviews as well as award nominations. I'm so glad I picked it up. Station Eleven is a massive novel. Not in length but in depth. It's also one of the best written novels I've read in a long time. Each line of this book feels like poetry. Its beautiful. Which is shocking given its a post apocalyptic novel about a flu that kills 99% of the worlds population.
Book Review: I Am Pilgrim
I don't read a ton of spy thrillers. It's a genre that I always seem to enjoy but very few of them actually stick with me. I Am Pilgrim might be one of the few thrillers that will stick with me far after finishing the book. For one thing it's one of the longest thrillers of this type I've ever read. Like I said not my favorite genre but series like Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series usually "rapp" (see what I did there) up in half the time. That keeps action tight and the plot line less susceptible to big gaping holes.
Book Review: Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography
I'm not the biggest Neil Patrick Harris fan. I've enjoyed his work at award shows and in How I Met Your Mother. But to say that I'm NPH's biggest fan would be a big overstatement. So why buy his autobiography? I genuinely was curious how he would write his "Choose Your Own Autobiography" like the old school choose your own adventure games.
Book Review: The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August
I've always loved time travel. It's one of my favorite genres. Right up there with apocalyptic and coming of age stories. If you just read the title, The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August you could probably see why I picked this one up. The book itself follows (you guessed it) Harry August a man who re-lives his same life over and over again.
